Life in Northern Cyprus

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a country located in the eastern Mediterranean, renowned for its natural beauty, rich historical heritage, and developing educational opportunities. Declaring its independence in 1983, the capital of the TRNC is Nicosia. With Turkish culture at its core, the country stands out for its safe and student-friendly environment. Cyprus is the third-largest island in the Mediterranean, following Sicily and Sardinia.

Türkiye is located 65 km to the north of Northern Cyprus; Syria is 112 km to the east, Israel 267 km, and Lebanon 162 km; Southern Cyprus lies to the south, with Egypt 418 km away; and Greece is located 965 km to the west.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is administratively divided into six districts: Nicosia, Famagusta, Kyrenia, Güzelyurt, İskele, and Lefke.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) offers a highly advantageous environment for student life. The costs of food, transportation, and accommodation are comparable to those in Türkiye. The country has a low crime rate overall, allowing students to pursue their education in a peaceful and safe environment.

Transportation and Visa

Travel from Türkiye to Northern Cyprus takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours by air. Newly admitted students to our university may apply for a passport before their arrival. Although it is also possible to enter Northern Cyprus using a national identity card, students are required to complete their student visa (immigration) procedures within three months.

Electricity

The electricity system in Northern Cyprus operates at 220/240V AC and 50Hz, as in Türkiye. However, three-pin electrical outlets are used throughout the country. To use your electrical devices without any issues, adapters that convert two-pin plugs to three-pin plugs are readily available at affordable prices in supermarkets and other stores.

Traffic

In Northern Cyprus, traffic flows on the left-hand side of the road. Therefore, it is important to exercise caution, especially when renting or driving a vehicle.

Currency

The official currency of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is the Turkish Lira (TRY). Daily expenses, rent, transportation, grocery shopping, and other transactions are generally conducted in Turkish Lira. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted throughout Northern Cyprus. In addition, foreign currencies such as the US Dollar (USD), Euro (EUR), and British Pound (GBP) can be exchanged for Turkish Lira at exchange offices.

Official Language

The official language of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is Turkish.
