Information About the Program

The Department of Political Science and International Relations at University of Mediterranean Karpasia (UMK) gradually developed, becoming one of the major departments offering undergraduate degree in the area of Political Science and İnternational Relations (PSIR). The department also offers students a broadly based core curriculum through which knowledge of the principles and practices of political life, democratic citizenship and political activity are acquired.

Political activity is basically about the exercise of power. PSIR asks fundamental questions about how power and resources are distributed around the world, and what impact political decisions have on societies. A typical PSIR major will learn about democracy and other forms of government, styles of leadership, the ideas of Plato, Machiavelli, Hobbes, and Locke, the influence of non-governmental organizations in world politics, the formation of public opinion, the role of new social media in politics, and constitutional law.

In another saying, PSIR is the study of politics and power from domestic, international, and comparative perspectives. It entails understanding political ideas, ideologies, institutions, policies, processes, and behavior, as well as groups, classes, government, diplomacy, law, strategy, and war. A background in PSIR is valuable for citizenship and political action, as well as for future careers in government, law, business, media, or public service.

Our courses are not designed to promote any particular ideological point of view or policies of a particular political party or government. Rather, you will be exposed to the complexity and variety of political phenomena, both in the past and in the contemporary world. You will be given the necessary tools to understand and critically analyse what you see happening around you, and to evaluate the merits of particular leadership changes, governmental decisions, regimes, international treaties, foreign policy initiatives, armed interventions and peace settlements.

The main objective of this program is; international relations, theories of international relations, political history, and international economics, to be able to contribute to the creation of national politics by enabling the relevant literature to be used as a judge in the framework of social sciences and international relations discipline and within the framework of such analysis and evaluation as required by professional life, to train talented specialists who can interpret them in the highest level.

International Relations Theory, Political History, Political Science, History of Political Thought, International Organizations, International Law, Foreign Policy Analysis, etc. are provided with a solid infrastructure in the field. In addition to basic courses, courses in a wide range of other areas of social sciences also help to acquire appropriate equipment.

The program allows researchers to follow scientific literature and current sources in PSIR and to make use of scientific data and theoretical approaches obtained from this basic/current literature and to conduct analyzes and evaluations related to global and regional problems.

Students are able to use advanced English and intermediate second foreign languages ​​when collecting information in the library and the internet, and they can apply to the information-processing technologies they need. When evaluations are made, critical approach and analytical thinking are kept in the foreground and social, scientific and ethical norms are given importance in the point of producing rational solutions.

Department also provides undergraduate students with an opportunity to learn about politics from a variety of different perspectives. Because of the broad nature of PSIR, majors develop a unique skill set that is quite attractive to employers and useful for any job:

Many students choose to study PSIR because they want to pursue a political career in city, or national government, work in a community, governmental, or non-governmental organization, or attend law school. PSIR program provides excellent preparation for work in the foreign affairs. Some businesses also employ policy analysts to study how regulations affect them and to propose changes to existing legislation. PSIR equips students with an understanding of the political institutions and laws that govern all businesses function.

Career Opportunities

Your education in PSIR means that you are particularly well suited for research, analysis, and writing, skills required at myriad organizations and businesses. Many positions require only an undergraduate degree, others may require an advanced degree, such as an M.A. or teaching certificate. Some of the more common careers for PSIR majors include the following:

Business liaison. Many businesses–such as international and domestic banks, law firms, and trade companies–hire employees who have a detailed understanding of local or international politics, Teacher, Non-profit organizations, International organizations, Government jobs, Lobbyist assistant or campaign operative, Legislative analyst/coordinator, Paralegal, International business, Legislative correspondent, Broadcast journalist, Government analyst, Foreign service officer, Staff assistant, Multimedia coordinator, Public relations assistant, Intelligence service analyst, Import/export coordinator, Trade specialist, Research assistant. Many students have also gone on to take postgraduate degrees.
